  • Probably the best known foreign firm in India, it has been active in the country since the early 90s in the power industry. It has continued to consolidate its presence over the years, and the last three have seen the firm act on a number of India's largest deals, including the $14 billion Vodafone Essar merger.

     

    In January 2007, it was the first of the magic circle firms to effectively set up in India via the establishment of Talwar Thakore, a new firm that initially comprised two high flying indviduals with which Linklaters had a close relationship. The new firm has taken on a number of ex-Linklaters lawyers in the past year including Shobhan Thakore's son, Kunal Thakore who was a partner in Linklaters' Hong Kong office.

RECENT INDIA ACTIVITY:

Vodafone Essar deal

Represented Vodafone on its US$11.1 billiob acquisition of a controlling stake in Hutchison Essar Ltd from Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd in 2008. It was India’s largest ever inward investment. 

Bharti Airtel and Zain merger

The firm has won a role acting for Bharti Airtel alongside Herbert Smith and AZB & Partners on the Indian company's $10 billion bid for Kuwaiti telecoms group Zain's African business.
